Title: Potential Impacts of Oiled Mussel Beds on Higher Organisms, Black Oystercatchers

Project Year and Number: 1992: R103-2

Other Fiscal Years and Numbers for this Project: 1994: 94020, 1992: R103-B, 1992: R103-A

Principal Investigator (PI): Brad Andres, US Fish & Wildlife Service

Assisting Personnel: None

Research Location: Prince William Sound

Restoration Category: Damage Assessment

Injured Resources Addressed: Black Oystercatchers , Mussels

Abstract: The two parts of R103-2 are linked by addressing the continued presence of oil outside the Prince William Sound area and implications for further contamination to higher order consumers. Also, mussel beds and boulder areas that are associated with the persistence of oil are similar because they both provide a structural heterogeneity that has allowed for the entrapment of oil and has apparently slowed the weathering of that oil.
