Each year, over 1,500 people attend the Alaska Forum on the Environment (AFE) to learn more about the environment and meet other Alaskans that work in the environmental field. The diversity of attendees at this statewide gathering sets this conference apart from any other. The Forum will have a focused theme during the first 2 days of the conference on the 20th Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill with keynote presentations, breakout sessions and exhibits. Monday & Tuesday: 20th Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill conference theme, includes keynote addresses both days, concurrent sessions and exhibits.
MONDAY:
- Breakout sessions begin in the morning and run through the afternoon, presenting an overview and status of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council restoration program including the persistent effects and toxicity of lingering oil. Presenters include: Jeep Rice, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); Jeff Short, consultant, retired NOAA; Eva Saulitis, North Gulf Oceanic Society; Jim Bodkin, US Geological Service; and Ron Heintz, NOAA.
- Lunch keynote: Craig Tillery, Deputy Attorney General, State of Alaska.
- Evening reception: co-hosted by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council and Oil Spill Recovery Institute.
TUESDAY:
- Breakout session in the morning: Community Forum.
- Lunch keynote: “When Catastrophe Strikes: Social Consequences for the Human Community“, Dr. Steven Picou, Professor of Sociology, University of South Alabama.
- Breakout sessions: Spill Prevention and Response: What’s changed (Part I & II).
